Wellbeing is the experience of health, happiness, and prosperity. It includes having good mental health, high life satisfaction, and a sense of meaning or purpose.
There are many factors that contribute to Community Wellbeing: Transport and Connectivity, Public Services, Environmental, Economic, Housing and the Built Environment, Social and Cultural.
The Torrington 100 team is working with communities in Great Torrington and the 16 villages to identify the key factors that will improve Community Wellbeing in their area – and then develop ideas, initiatives and solutions to meet the local needs.
The importance of ‘Belonging’ to Wellbeing
The more belonging people experience the happier they are. Belonging starts with connections with others, which may turn into friendships and ultimately grow into a sense of being part of something bigger where difference is appreciated. Self-esteem is an essential component of wellbeing which stems from increased confidence as a result of strong connections and a sense of achievement and pride. A sense of opportunity and agency, inspiration, opportunities for personal growth, recognition and appreciation contribute to feelings of fulfilment.
That sense of belonging is underpinned by:
- Memories of community
- Identification with others
- Having roots
- People you can turn to
- Feeling part of something

Helping individuals and communities find that sense of belonging, leading to personal and community wellbeing, is the goal of Torrington 100.
